Asma Aktar’s journey is one of resilience and hope, rooted in the humble village of Salna, Gazipur. Born into a large family with seven siblings, Asma’s life has been marked by both profound loss and unwavering strength. At 26, she married a hardworking man who earned a living as a rickshaw puller and day laborer. Together, they faced heartbreaking challenges, including the loss of their first daughter at a tender age. Yet, despite the hardships of raising two more daughters while supporting a sick husband without family help, Asma’s determination shines through. Through sheer grit and perseverance, she carved a path for herself as a skilled garment worker and a proud mother, continuously striving for a better future for her family.
My name is Asma Aktar, and my hometown is Salna, Gazipur. I come from a big family with four sisters and three brothers. At the age of 26, I got married to a man who worked hard as a rickshaw puller and did labor on others’ land. Two years after our marriage, we were blessed with our first child, a daughter. Tragically, Allah took her from us when she was just 12 years old.
After that heartbreaking loss, I became the mother of two more daughters. Since my husband’s income was not enough, I started working at a garment factory in an area known as Master Bari. Eventually, I sought better opportunities and joined the Utah factory. I am proud to say that, even though I had no education, my strong work experience helped me secure my position as a sewing operator. My life has never been easy. My husband, unable to work regularly, is a kidney patient. I could not get help from either my in-laws or my own family, so I had to shoulder all our responsibilities alone. You can imagine how hard it has been for a woman with two children and a sick husband. Still, I keep working.
Having a secure job in Utah gives me mental strength and privilege—I know I can manage my family’s needs. My elder daughter just appeared for her SSC exam and earned a GPA of 4.39, which makes me so proud. My younger daughter is now in class six and receives a scholarship from Utah; I’ve heard that the Tesco buyer is also involved in supporting this program. My daughters want to take on a big responsibility; they want to handle my duties
Despite all these struggles, I’ve enrolled in Utah’s adult education program because I want to become literate. I am deeply grateful to Utah for bringing hope and color back into my life. I am confident that, no matter what happens to my husband, I will be able to continue working and raise my daughters as I wish.
Thanks to Utah, I am still able to dream and feel comforted by the support I receive. Without this job and these opportunities, I might not have survived. I pray for the continued well-being and long life of the Utah management
আমার নাম আসমা আক্তার, আমার বাড়ি সালনা, গাজীপুরে। আমি বড় একটি পরিবার থেকে এসেছি, যেখানে আমাদের চার বোন ও তিন ভাই। ২৬ বছর বয়সে আমার বিয়ে হয় এক পরিশ্রমী মানুষের সঙ্গে, যিনি রিকশা চালাতেন এবং অন্যের জমিতে শ্রমিক হিসেবে কাজ করতেন। বিয়ের দুই বছর পর আমাদের প্রথম সন্তান, একটি মেয়ে, জন্ম নেয়। কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যবশত, আল্লাহ তাকে আমাদের কাছ থেকে নিয়ে নেন যখন তার বয়স মাত্র ১২ বছর।এই হৃদয়বিদারক ঘটনার পর আমার আরও দুই কন্যাসন্তানের জন্ম হয়। স্বামীর আয় যথেষ্ট না হওয়ায় আমি মাস্টার বাড়ি নামে পরিচিত একটি এলাকার একটি গার্মেন্টস কারখানায় কাজ শুরু করি। পরবর্তীতে আরও ভালো সুযোগের খোঁজে আমি ইউটা কারখানায় যোগ দিই। গর্বের সঙ্গে বলতে পারি, কোনো শিক্ষা না থাকা সত্ত্বেও আমার শক্তিশালী কাজের অভিজ্ঞতাই আমাকে সেলাই অপারেটর হিসেবে আমার অবস্থান নিশ্চিত করতে সাহায্য করেছে।
আমার জীবন কখনোই সহজ ছিল না। আমার স্বামী নিয়মিত কাজ করতে পারেন না—তিনি কিডনি রোগী। শ্বশুরবাড়ি বা নিজের পরিবার—কোনো দিক থেকেই সাহায্য পাইনি, তাই পুরো দায়িত্ব একাই কাঁধে নিতে হয়েছে। আপনি নিশ্চয়ই বুঝতে পারেন, দুই সন্তান ও অসুস্থ স্বামীকে নিয়ে একজন নারীর জন্য জীবন কতটা কঠিন হতে পারে। তবুও আমি কাজ চালিয়ে যাচ্ছি।
ইউটা-তে একটি স্থায়ী চাকরি আমাকে মানসিক শক্তি ও নিরাপত্তা দেয়—আমি জানি, আমার পরিবারের প্রয়োজন আমি পূরণ করতে পারব। আমার বড় মেয়ে সম্প্রতি এসএসসি পরীক্ষা দিয়েছে এবং ৪.৩৯ জিপিএ পেয়েছে, যা আমাকে খুব গর্বিত করেছে। ছোট মেয়ে এখন ষষ্ঠ শ্রেণিতে পড়ে এবং ইউটা থেকে স্কলারশিপ পায়; আমি শুনেছি টেস্কো বায়ারও এই প্রোগ্রামে সহায়তা করেন। আমার মেয়েরা বড় দায়িত্ব নিতে চায়; তারা আমার দায়িত্বগুলো ভাগ করে নিতে চায়।
এই সব সংগ্রামের মাঝেও আমি ইউটা’র প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক শিক্ষা কর্মসূচিতে ভর্তি হয়েছি, কারণ আমি শিক্ষিত হতে চাই। আমার জীবনে নতুন আশা ও রং এনে দেওয়ার জন্য আমি ইউটা’র প্রতি গভীরভাবে কৃতজ্ঞ। আমি আত্মবিশ্বাসী যে, স্বামীর যাই হোক না কেন, আমি কাজ চালিয়ে যেতে পারব এবং আমার মেয়েদের নিজের মতো করে মানুষ করতে পারব।
ইউটা’র কারণে আজও আমি স্বপ্ন দেখতে পারছি এবং তাদের সহায়তায় সান্ত্বনা পাচ্ছি। এই চাকরি ও সুযোগগুলো না থাকলে হয়তো আমি বেঁচে থাকতে পারতাম না। আমি ইউটা ব্যবস্থাপনার দীর্ঘায়ু ও মঙ্গল কামনা করি।
