Opi’s Journey: Behind every stitch
I was born in Tetulia, Panchagarh, in a small family of four. From my earliest memories, I saw my father struggling with heart problems. I am the eldest of two sisters, and my mother is the pillar of our family—the main breadwinner who has dedicated her life to keeping us afloat. Her days have been filled with relentless struggle, bearing the burden of my education expenses, my sister’s schooling, and my father’s medical costs. It may sound like an old Bengali film story, but this is our reality; we know all too well how tough life can be.

আমি তেতুলিয়া, পঞ্চগড়ে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছি, ছোট একটি চার সদস্যের পরিবারে। আমার প্রাথমিক স্মৃতিগুলো থেকেই আমি দেখেছি আমার বাবাকে হৃদরোগে কষ্ট পেতে। আমি দুই বোনের মধ্যে বড় এবং আমাদের মা আমাদের পরিবারের মূল শক্তি—প্রধান উপার্জনকারী যিনি আমাদের টিকে রাখার জন্য তাঁর জীবন উৎসর্গ করেছেন। তাঁর দিনগুলো ছিল অক্লান্ত সংগ্রামে পরিপূর্ণ, আমার শিক্ষা খরচ, বোনের স্কুলের খরচ এবং বাবার
চিকিৎসার বোঝা বহন করে। এটা হয়তো একটি পুরানো বাংলা চলচ্চিত্রের গল্পের মতো শোনাতে পারে, কিন্তু এটা আমাদের বাস্তবতা; আমরা ভালো করেই জানি জীবন কত কঠিন হতে পারে।
My mother started by working from home on a sewing machine. Eventually, through sheer determination, she secured a job at Utah Knitting and Dyeing, which prompted our entire family to move to the Gazipur area. Poverty was a harsh teacher that pushed us into a different world—one without tuition fees, new clothes for Eid, or fresh schoolbooks. Our downcast eyes hid dreams and hopes, but we firmly believed that someday, through hard work and perseverance, we would fulfill all our desires ourselves.
আমার মা বাড়ি থেকে সেলাই মেশিনে কাজ শুরু করেছিলেন। অবশেষে, ধৈর্যের মাধ্যমে তিনি ইউটাহ নাইটিং অ্যান্ড ডাইং-এ একটি চাকরি পেয়েছিলেন, যার ফলে আমাদের পুরো পরিবার গাজীপুর এলাকায় চলে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিল। দারিদ্র্য ছিল একটি কঠোর শিক্ষক যা আমাদের এমন এক জগতে ঠেলে দিল—যেখানে কোনো টিউশন ফি নেই, ঈদে নতুন কাপড় নেই, বা নতুন স্কুলবই নেই। আমাদের নামমাত্র চোখস্বপ্ন ও আশা লুকিয়ে রেখেছিল, কিন্তু আমরা দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করতাম যে একদিন কঠোর পরিশ্রম এবং ধৈর্যের মাধ্যমে আমরা নিজেরাই আমাদের সব ইচ্ছা পূরণ করব।
Those difficult days have passed, and we have grown. I once had no clear idea of what “women’s empowerment” meant, but I have witnessed it living through my mother. She is courageous, honest, and tirelessly hardworking. I believe the strength she draws comes largely from her job at Utah. Utah transformed my mother into a superwoman—managing all family responsibilities single-handedly while still providing a nurturing environment for us. I appeared for my SSC and HSC exams and passed successfully with good results. My mother, Asia Aktar Asha, continues to work as an operator, inspiring me every day.
সেই কঠিন দিনগুলো পার হয়ে গেছে, এবং আমরা বড় হয়েছি। এক সময় “মহিলাদের ক্ষমতায়ন” কী তা আমার স্পষ্ট ধারণা ছিল না, কিন্তু আমি আমার মায়ের মধ্য দিয়ে সেটা জীবন্ত দেখেছি। তিনি সাহসী, সত্যনিষ্ঠ এবং অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রমী। আমি বিশ্বাস করি তার সংগ্রহের শক্তি মূলত তার ইউটাহ-এর চাকরি থেকে আসে। ইউটাহ আমার মাকে একটি সুপারউইমেনে পরিণত করেছে—সব পরিবারিক দায়িত্ব এককভাবে সামলান এবং আমাদের জন্য একটি স্নেহপূর্ণ পরিবেশ তৈরি করেন। আমি আমার এসএসসি এবং এইচএসসি পরীক্ষায় অংশগ্রহণ করেছিলাম এবং ভাল ফলাফলসহ সফল হয়েছি। আমার মা,আশিয়া আক্তার আশা, অপারেটর হিসেবে কাজ চালিয়ে যাচ্ছেন, এবং প্রতিদিন আমাকে অনুপ্রেরণা দিচ্ছেন।]
I prepared myself for employment, and when my mother told me about a vacancy at Utah Woven, I was determined to try. I passed the viva and other exams successfully and secured the position of a Needle Woman. Though it feels like a modest beginning, I am eager to grow alongside Utah. This company is a place full of opportunities to learn and educate myself further. Here, I feel like part of a family—everyone is supportive and willing to teach me whenever I make mistakes. I am grateful for the chance to explore different aspects of work, and words cannot express how blessed I feel in this environment.
আমি কর্মসংস্থানের জন্য নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করেছিলাম, এবং যখন আমার মা আমাকে ইউটাহ ওভেনের একটি শূন্য পদ সম্পর্কে জানালেন, তখন আমি চেষ্টা করার জন্য দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ ছিলাম। আমি সফলভাবে ভাইভা এবং অন্যান্য পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হয়ে নিডল ওম্যানের পদ লাভ করেছি। যদিও এটা একটা সাধারণ শুরু বলে মনে হয়, আমি ইউটাহের সাথে উঠে যাওয়ার জন্য আগ্রহী। এই কোম্পানি শেখার এবং নিজেকে আরও শিক্ষিত করার সুযোগে পরিপূর্ণ একটি স্থান। এখানে আমি একটি পরিবারের অংশ মনে করি—প্রত্যেকেই সহায়ক এবং যখনই আমি ভুল করি, আমাকে শেখাতে ইচ্ছুক। আমি কাজের বিভিন্ন দিক অন্বেষণের সুযোগ পেয়ে কৃতজ্ঞ এবং এই পরিবেশে আমি কতটা ভাগ্যবান তা কথায় প্রকাশ করা কঠিন।
My mother watches me grow with pride, and I am committed to making her proud even more. The HR department here looks after me attentively, supporting me every step of the way whenever I need help. I am deeply thankful to Allah for his blessings and kindness in my workplace and life.
আমার মা গর্বের সাথে আমাকে বড় হতে দেখেন, এবং আমি তাকে আরও গর্বিত করার জন্য প্রতিজ্ঞাবদ্ধ। এখানে এইচআর বিভাগ আমাকে মনোযোগ সহকারে দেখাশোনা করে, যখনই আমাকে সাহায্যের প্রয়োজন হয় তারা প্রতিটি ধাপে আমাকে সাপোর্ট করে। আমার কর্মক্ষেত্র এবং জীবনে আল্লাহর বরকত ও দয়ার জন্য আমি গভীর কৃতজ্ঞ।
Looking ahead, I want to continue my education while taking responsibility for my sister’s schooling. My dream is to open an ornament store where women can buy their desired jewelry at affordable prices. This is the future I envision—not just for myself, but for every hardworking woman inspired by my mother’s strength.
আমি ভবিষ্যতের দিকে তাকিয়ে, আমার পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাওয়ার পাশাপাশি আমার বোনের স্কুলের জন্য দায়িত্ব নিতে চাই। আমার স্বপ্ন একটি গহনার দোকান খোলা যেখানে মহিলারা তাদের কাঙ্ক্ষিত গহনা সাশ্রয়ী মূল্যে কিনতে পারবেন। এটা আমার কল্পিত ভবিষ্যত—শুধুমাত্র আমার জন্য নয়, বরং প্রতিটি পরিশ্রমী মহিলার জন্য যারা আমার মায়ের শক্তি দ্বারা অনুপ্রাণিত।
